Have you ever noticed how weather brings out cravings in you? And, no, I don't mean sex, however winter does tend to make me want to snuggle more. I'm talking about food and drink.
Today at the grocery store, I began craving fresh fruit. Seeing as it is in the 80's here and humid, my thirst was mighty, let me tell you, and I wanted nothing more than to sink my teeth into a big juicy peach or mango. So, I bought some mangos and some peaches and I planned to make myself a nice fruit salad later. That should work on my thirst, I thought.
But then I passed a stack of Coke bottles in their crates and began having a flashback to my childhood in Alabama at a family-owned grocery store in my neighborhood that I loved to go to with my mom. They had a huge coke machine (and yes, y'all...I'm from the south so we call all sodas "coke") that spat out those wonderful, cold, GLASS bottles of Coca-Cola, Sprite, Orange Nehi, you name it... Ahhhhh!
There is nothing like drinking a Coke out of a cold, glass bottle. It just tastes better and it stays cold longer than these plastic things they have today. Plus, you could bring them back to the store to recycle and get a nickle or a dime in return. I say they should bring back the glass bottles. What say you?For your further enjoyment, I found a cute website that has the history of Coca-Cola and its slogans. There are a few that stood out to me:
1. 1905- "Wherever you go...you will find Coca-Cola" (well, that's certainly true today)
2. 1911 - "Enjoy a glass of liquid laughter" (sip...ha ha ha...sip...ha ha ha....)
3. 1928 - "A pure drink of natural flavors" (Pure? I heard it can clean your kitchen sink pipes.)
4. 1933 - "Don't wear a tired, thirsty face" (OK, what face should I wear?)
5. 1947 - "Relax with the pause that refreshes" (this seems to be a favorite slogan...)
6. 1959 - "Make it a real meal" (huh?)
7. 1970 - "It's the real thing" (classic)
So, what are your favorite cokes, sodas, pops, whatever you call it? Ever had peach Nehi? Delicious!

** the hubby just advised me that you can still buy the glass Coke bottles at Sam's Club and elsewhere, but it just costs more. Well, dang!
** Don't mean to offend Pepsi drinkers out there. Pepsi is considered "coke" to us southerners and is also enjoyed best in a glass bottle.
