It's ROAD TRIP time!
And who best has all things roadside? It has to be www.roadsideamerica.com, that's who. Today I want to feature a place I have visited in the past:
Deadwood, South Dakota.
When I was just eighteen, my grandparents took me on a month-long road trip around America and parts of western Canada. It was extremely fun as well as educational.
In Deadwood, our major stop was Mt. Moriah Cemetary where Wild West legends, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. In town, you can also see re-inactments of how Wild Bill was gunned down while playing cards. It's wild west history at it's best.
According to Wikipedia, "James Butler Hickok (May 27, 1837 – August 2, 1876), better known as Wild Bill Hickok, was a legendary figure in the American Wild West. He is perhaps the best known figure from that era. After fighting in the union army during the civil war, he became a legendary army scout, and later, lawman and gunfighter."
I love roadtrips and can't wait until ours next week. We won't be going to South Dakota, but someday I plan on taking my kids there and let them see a little bit of what the old west used to be like. No, we plan on heading to the Smoky Mountains and do a little bit of camping.
Roadtrips are educational and fun and some of the best family time you can get. Just remember to take the time to stop frequently and enjoy where you are at the time. Don't worry so much on the final destination. That's the secret to a good roadtrip
So, y'all dust off the suitcases, the family wagon and do a Chevy Chase around America, or at least in a small part of your area. You never know what you may find.
