Friday's Features (yes I know it's only Thursday...)
For those of you who remember the Friday's Features that I used to do, you' ll know that I haven't done one in a while. For those who don't remember, it's where I feature a roadside attraction, mostly ones that aren't well-known. Anyway, I've decided that it was too fun to quit entirely, so today I want to entertain you with this little known (except to certain sub-groups) town in Riverside, Iowa.
Back in the late 80's, Riverside made the claim that it was the future home of Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirkand that he will be born there on March 22, 2233 (the town asked permission of the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, and he supposedly said yes). Every year in June, Riverside hosts Trek Fest, a town festival dedicated to the Star Trek phenomenon and every March 22, hosts a birthday celebration for the future space captain.
With parades, games and the popular live band event, Spockapalooza, there's no wonder that Trekkies gather in Riverside in March and June. Too bad we won't be around in 2233 to see if Kirk really is born. ;)
And this is my blog... Kudzu, funny family stories, poems, family ghosts, snakes, sun-kissed southern memories all inside! Plus some travel reviews, recipes and more! I also make handcrafted jewelry! Check out my jewelry blog - Colors of the Woods

A Tennessee man and an Alabama man were both fighting in a war and were captured by the enemy.
"Before we put you to death," said the enemy, "do you have any last requests?"
"Yes," said the Alabaman. "Could you play 'Yeah, Alabama' before you shoot me?"
"Sure," said the enemy. "How about you, Tennessean?"
